Imagine a global security driven by collaboration — among agencies, government, the private sector and the public. That’s not just the distant hope of open-source fans, it’s the vision of James Stavridis, the Supreme Commander of NATO, who shares vivid moments from recent military history to explain why security of the future should be built with bridges rather than walls.

General Stavridis

General James Stavridis

In this video General James Stavridis, the Supreme Commander of NATO forces in Europe, talks about a global security plan based on collaboration.  On the one hand he acknowledges that military force is sometimes necessary, but he proposes that, in the end military force cannot bring us the security we seek in the 21st century.  He proposes a global security plan based on collaboration between countries, public and private agencies, and the public.  He talks about things like teaching Afghan soldiers to read, and to play baseball in addition to how to fight, and about building relationships through social media like Facebook and Twitter.  He proposes that building these collaborative relationships as being essential elements of a global security plan for the 21st century.

This from one of our top military commanders.  So why am I posting this on a blog about spiritual growth and about “Turning Around”?  Because many of the things he talks about are things we talk about as spiritual principles. They clearly talk about a profound “Turning Around” for, not only our military, but for all of us as nations and as individuals.  Suppose we, as a nation took his advice and his idea of “building bridges instead of walls” became the focus of both our approach to domestic policy and international policy.  If we can let go of all of our presuppositions and be open to General Stavridis’ message might not we see this as our nation growing spiritually?  Is the General essentially calling us as a nation to “Turn Around”, even though he is using different language?
